A Study on the Menarche of 5th & 6th Graders of Primary Schools in Urban Area

Abstract
It is confirmed through recent studies that gradually the average age for menarche is being lowered during the most recent years. It is assumed that age at initial menstruation is affected by many factors such s environment, weather, nutrition, education and degree of modernization and so on. Also recent trend in Korea indicates that a lot of discussions are being generated as to the need of sex education as a social problem.
The author carried out a survey on menarche with 5th & 6th grade girls of primary School in Seoul to acertain their Maturity and knowledge on sex. A total of 34 schools were selected out of the public and private schools located in Seoul and it include all the admistrative districts of Seoul City, the Nineku¢¥s. The sample size was approximatly 4 percent 4,645 girls out of the 125,465. 5th & 6th graders in Seoul. The survey was conducted during the period from May 10 to June 10 1971. A set of about 40th questions were given in oquestionnaire to every girls to write in the classrooms. The data were tabulated by automatic computing system.
The Major results are as follow;
1) The Student¢¥s Knowledge about the Menstruation and Their Soruce of Information;
About 59 percent of the 5th graders(1,318 out of 2,236) and 77.8 percent of the 6th graders (1,875 out of 2,409) have the knowledge about menstruation, while 41.1 percent of the former group (534 out of 2,409) did not know about it and 68.7 percent of all sueveyed girls have heard about the menstruation. As to the source of information "teacher" was the source with 51.3 percent of girls and with 21.5 percent the informant was "mother" in 0.6 percent and 7.8 percent the fimformant were "father" and "sister" respectively, and in 19.6 percent the informant were friend, relatives and others.
It may be constructed as a problem that about 20 percent of the girls obtained information about the menstrucation from the persons other than their teachers or parents.
2) The Frequency of Experiencing Menarche and Average Age of Menarche in Primary School;
Menarche is experienced by about 10 percent (223 out of 2,236) of 5th graders and about 8.8 percent (211 out of 2409) of 6th graders and 9.3 percent (434 out of 4,465) girls have experienced menarche by 5th & 6th graders combined. This implies that 93 girls out 1,000 have experienced the initial menstruation. The table-7 shows the average age at menrche is 11.2 yrs. with the 5th graers(223) and 11.6 yrs. with 6th graders (211). The average age at menarche throughout both graders is estimated at 11.4 yrs.
3) The Economic Condition of the girls having experienced menarche;
It has been Revaealed that lower classes were higher percentages than middle or upper middle ordinary classes. The girls who are living in the lodiging houses also demonstrated higher precentages in a experiencing menarche.
4) The Discipline by Parents;
Higher percentages of experiencing manarche were obtained with girls of "indifferent" parents than of "rigid" and "moderate", indicating the need for introducing the education on menarche or sex as early as the primary education.
5) The Emottonal State During Menarche;
About 58 percent of the surveyed girls were embarrassed, 53 percent felt bahsful and 52 percent were fearful at the first menstruation, again indicating a need an early introduction of systemic education about sex and menstruation.
